Does regional variability in anti-LGBTQ bias contribute to sexual minorities’ underrepresentation in STEM? Using national datasets, we describe the relationship between regional levels of bias against sexual minorities and sexual minorities’ representation among adults with STEM bachelor’s degrees and in STEM occupations in those regions, as well as the likelihood that sexual minority students persist in STEM majors at universities in those regions. These data support the need to document LGBTQ status in federal STEM surveys.


Disadvantaged Group Members Who Deny Systematic Discrimination are Happier and Healthier

Abstract: Summarizing evidence that women and LGBTQ+ people are motivated to minimize group-based discrimination. Such minimization is associated with better psychological and physical wellbeing, and is motivated by a need to see the system as fair.


Resolving LGBTQ Disparities in STEM Representation Through Demographic Data, AAAS panel discussion, Feb, 2021

Growing evidence points to troubling LGBTQ disparities in STEM, but major data collections of our STEM educational system and workforce have not included sexual orientation and gender identity (SOGI) demographic questions. The speakers of this session will explain how the future of a diverse and inclusive STEM ecosystem necessarily depends on such demographic data. SOGI data are needed to better understand and address LGBTQ disparities in STEM and to build a STEM pipeline that is inclusive to all.
